Your MIAM is usually a one-to-one meeting between you and the mediator. During the meeting, we will:
-
Discuss your circumstances: You can explain what has happened, the issues you are facing and what you hope to achieve.
-
Explain family mediation: We will talk you through how mediation works, what the process involves and how it may help you.
-
Explore your options: We will consider whether mediation is suitable for your situation and discuss any alternative ways of resolving your family matters.
-
Answer your questions: You will have the opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns and understand what to expect if you decide to proceed.
-
Discuss the next steps: If mediation is appropriate and you wish to continue, we can explain how joint mediation sessions may be arranged and what happens next.
A MIAM is an opportunity to gather information and consider your options. You are not committing to mediation simply by attending.
What happens after your MIAM?
Following your meeting, you will have a clearer understanding of whether family mediation could help you and how the process may work for your circumstances.
If you decide to proceed and mediation is considered suitable, the next step may be to arrange mediation sessions with the other person involved. These sessions provide an opportunity to discuss matters such as arrangements for children, finances, property and other issues arising from separation.
